Calibration and validation of models for short-term decomposition and N mineralization of plant residues in the tropics Scientia Agricola
Nascimento,Alexandre Ferreira do; Mendonça,Eduardo de Sá; Leite,Luiz Fernando Carvalho; Scholberg,Johannes; Neves,Julio Cesar Lima.
Insight of nutrient release patterns associated with the decomposition of plant residues is important for their effective use as a green manure in food production systems. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the ability of the Century, APSIM and NDICEA simulation models for predicting the decomposition and N mineralization of crop residues in the tropical Atlantic forest biome, Brazil. The simulation models were calibrated based on actual decomposition and N mineralization rates of three types of crop residues with different chemical and biochemical composition. The models were also validated for different pedo-climatic conditions and crop residues conditions. In general, the accuracy of decomposition and N mineralization improved after calibration. Overall...

Carbon and Nitrogen Stocks and Humic Fractions in Brazilian Organosols Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Valladares,Gustavo Souza; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Benites,Vinícius de Melo; Anjos,Lúcia Helena Cunha dos; Ebeling,Adierson Gilvani; Guareschi,Roni Fernandes.
ABSTRACT Despite limited geographic expression of Organosols in Brazil, their high carbon storage capacity and natural environmental vulnerability justifies further studies on C and N stocks in these soils and their relationship to the nature of organic matter. Evaluation of physical and chemical properties of organic soils and their ability to store C is important so as to develop sustainable management practices for their preservation. The objectives of the study were to measure the total organic carbon stock (OCst), total nitrogen stock (Nst), and humic fractions in Organosols from different environments and regions of Brazil, and to correlate the data with soil chemical (pH, P, K, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, H+Al, CEC, V) and physical properties (soil bulk...

Bernardi,Alberto Carlos de Campos; Machado,Pedro Luiz Oliveira de Almeida; Madari,Beata Emoke; Tavares,Sílvio Roberto de Lucena; Campos,David Vilas Boas de; Crisóstomo,Lindbergue de Araújo.
Soil organic matter accumulation provides benefits to soil productivity and reduces atmospheric carbon concentration. However, little is known about the accumulation of C and N by sandy soils under perennial irrigated crops in semiarid regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of irrigated fruit orchard cultivation on the stocks of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (N) of an Arenosol/Quartzpsament from Paraipaba-CE, Semiarid Brazil. Soil samples were taken from irrigated orchards of banana (Musa ssp.), cashew (Anacardium ocidentale), guava (Psidium guajava), bullock's heart (Annona reticulata), mango (Mangifera indica), and sapote (Manilkara zapota) in the wetted-bulb and non-irrigated area between the plant rows....

Carbon sequestration in clay and silt fractions of Brazilian soils under conventional and no-tillage systems Scientia Agricola
Reis,Cecília Estima Sacramento dos; Dick,Deborah Pinheiro; Caldas,Jennifer da Silva; Bayer,Cimélio.
The capacity of soils to sequestrate carbon (C) is mainly related to the formation of organo-mineral complexes. In this study, we investigated the influence of soil management systems on the C retention capacity of soil with an emphasis on the silt and clay fractions of two subtropical soils with different mineralogy and climate. Samples from a Humic Hapludox and a Rhodic Hapludox, clayey soils cultivated for approximately 30 years under no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) were collected from six layers distributed within 100-cm soil depth from each site and from an adjacent native forest. After the removal of particulate organic matter (POM), the suspension (<53 µm) was sonicated, the silt and clay fractions were separated in accordance with...

Carbon stock and humification index of organic matter affected by sugarcane straw and soil management Scientia Agricola
Segnini,Aline; Carvalho,João Luís Nunes; Bolonhezi,Denizart; Milori,Débora Marcondes Bastos Pereira; Silva,Wilson Tadeu Lopes da; Simões,Marcelo Luiz; Cantarella,Heitor; Maria,Isabella C. de; Martin-Neto,Ladislau.
The maintenance of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) straw on a soil surface increases the soil carbon (C) stocks, but at lower rates than expected. This fact is probably associated with the soil management adopted during sugarcane replanting. This study aimed to assess the impact on soil C stocks and the humification index of soil organic matter (SOM) of adopting no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) for sugarcane replanting. A greater C content and stock was observed in the NT area, but only in the 0-5 cm soil layer (p < 0.05). Greater soil C stock (0-60 cm) was found in soil under NT, when compared to CT and the baseline. While C stock of 116 Mg ha-1 was found in the baseline area, in areas under CT and NT systems the values ranged from 120 to 127...

Carbon stocks in organic matter fractions as affected by land use and soil management, with emphasis on no-tillage effect Ciência Rural
Bayer,Cimélio; Dick,Deborah Pinheiro; Ribeiro,Genicelli Mafra; Scheuermann,Klaus Konrad.
Land use and soil management may affect both labile and humified soil organic matter (SOM) fractions, but the magnitude of these changes is poorly known in subtropical environments. This study investigated effects of four land use and soil management systems (forest, native pasture, and conventional tillage and no-tillage in a wheat/soybean succession) on (i) total soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks (0 to 250mm depth) and on (ii) carbon (C) stocks in labile (coarse, light) and humified (mineral-associated, humic substances) SOM fractions (0 to 25mm depth), in a Hapludox soil from southern Brazil. In comparison to the adjacent forest site, conventionally tilled soil presented 36% (46.2Mg ha-1) less SOC in the 0 to 250mm depth and a widespread decrease in C...

Carbon stocks of an Oxisol after thirty-eight years under different tillage systems AGRIAMBI
Magalhaes,Sulamirtes S. de A.; Ramos,Fabricio T.; Weber,Oscarlina L. dos S..
ABSTRACT Soil carbon (C) stock determination can subsidize discussions on the continuity of an agricultural management. This study aimed to evaluate the stocks of total organic C (STOC) and labile C (SLC), and the indices of C lability (CLI), C compartment (CCI) and C management (CMI), and correlate them with chemical and physical attributes of a Red Yellow Latosol (Oxisol) managed for 38 years with different tillage systems in a Cerrado region of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected in three layers (0-0.05, 0.05-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m). The CMI (CLI x CCI) showed higher STOC possibly as the tillage depth decreased, because none of the tillage systems conserved STOC and SLC in the layers of 0-0.05 and 0.05-0.10 m,...

Changes in Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stocks in Long-Term Experiments in Southern Brazil Simulated with Century 4.5 Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Weber,Mirla Andrade; Mielniczuk,João; Tornquist,Carlos Gustavo.
ABSTRACT The Century model has successfully simulated soil organic matter dynamics in many agroecosystems. However, initial applications in southern Brazil produced mixed results. The objective of this study was to calibrate and validate Century 4.5 to simulate soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) dynamics under diverse soil management practices in subtropical Brazil. Soil C and N data from two long-term experiments established on a degraded Acrisol in the early 1980s were used. Treatments were conventional or no-tillage; grass or grass/legume cropping systems; and corn with or without mineral N fertilizer. The calibration process iteratively modified model parameters to match simulated values of C additions and Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) and Soil Organic...

CHARACTERIZATION OF HEADWATERS PEATS OF THE RIO ARAÇUAÍ, MINAS GERAIS STATE, BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Bispo,Diêgo Faustolo Alves; Silva,Alexandre Christofaro; Christofaro,Cristiano; Silva,Max Leandro Naves; Barbosa,Maurício Soares; Silva,Bárbara Pereira Christofaro; Barral,Uidemar Moraes.
Peatlands are soil environments that accumulate water and organic carbon and function as records of paleo-environmental changes. The variability in the composition of organic matter is reflected in their morphological, physical, and chemical properties. The aim of this study was to characterize these properties in peatlands from the headwaters of the Rio Araçuaí (Araçuaí River) in different stages of preservation. Two cores from peatlands with different vegetation types (moist grassland and semideciduous seasonal forest) from the Rio Preto [Preto River] headwaters (conservation area) and the Córrego Cachoeira dos Borges [Cachoeira dos Borges stream] (disturbed area) were sampled. Both are tributaries of the Rio Araçuaí. Samples were taken from layers of 15...

Classification of soil respiration in areas of sugarcane renewal using decision tree Scientia Agricola
Farhate,Camila Viana Vieira; Souza,Zigomar Menezes de; Oliveira,Stanley Robson de Medeiros; Carvalho,João Luís Nunes; Scala Júnior,Newton La; Santos,Ana Paula Guimarães.
ABSTRACT: The use of data mining is a promising alternative to predict soil respiration from correlated variables. Our objective was to build a model using variable selection and decision tree induction to predict different levels of soil respiration, taking into account physical, chemical and microbiological variables of soil as well as precipitation in renewal of sugarcane areas. The original dataset was composed of 19 variables (18 independent variables and one dependent (or response) variable). The variable-target refers to soil respiration as the target classification. Due to a large number of variables, a procedure for variable selection was conducted to remove those with low correlation with the variable-target. For that purpose, four approaches of...

Contribution of Eucalyptus Harvest Residues and Nitrogen Fertilization to Carbon Stabilization in Ultisols of Southern Bahia Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Oliveira,Fernanda Cristina Caparelli; Silva,Ivo Ribeiro; Ferreira,Gabriel William Dias; Soares,Emanuelle Mercês Barros; Silva,Sérgio Ricardo; Silva,Eulene Francisco.
ABSTRACT: Eucalyptus forests in southern Bahia (BA) are planted in soils with a sandy surface layer and humid tropical climate, conditions that lead to soil carbon (C) decomposition. Recent studies have shown that nitrogen (N) may be important for soil C stabilization. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of Eucalyptus harvest residues and nitrogen fertilization to C stabilization in Ultisols of southern BA. The experiment was conducted in Eucalyptus clonal plantations cultivated in two regions of Eunápolis, BA, Brazil, with different clay content: southern region (140 g kg-1 of clay) and western region (310 g kg-1 of clay). Five treatments were evaluated: one control (CTR), without Eucalyptus harvest residues and N fertilization, and...

Correcting field determination of elemental contents in soils via portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Dijair,Thaís Santos Branco; Silva,Fernanda Magno; Teixeira,Anita Fernanda dos Santos; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry has been useful worldwide for determining soil elemental content under both field and laboratory conditions. However, the field results are influenced by several factors, including soil moisture (M), soil texture (T) and soil organic matter (SOM). Thus, the objective of this work was to create linear mathematical models for conversion of Al2O3, CaO, Fe, K2O, SiO2, V, Ti and Zr contents obtained by pXRF directly in field to those obtained under laboratory conditions, i.e., in air-dried fine earth (ADFE), using M, T and SOM as auxiliary variables, since they influence pXRF results. pXRF analyses in field were performed on 12 soil profiles with different parent materials. From them, 59 samples were...

Decomposition of Arachis pintoi and Hyparrhenia rufa litters in monoculture and intercropped systems under lowland soil PAB
Oliveira,Christiane Abreu de; Muzzi,Maria Rita Scotti; Purcino,Hortênsia Abrantes; Marriel,Ivanildo Evódio; Sá,Nadja Maria Horta de.
Tropical grasslands under lowland soils are generally underutilized and the litter of forage legumes may be used to recover these degraded pastures. The objective of this work was to study the dynamics of litter decomposition of Arachis pintoi (pinto peanut), Hyparrhenia rufa (thatching grass) and a mixture of both species in a lowland soil. These treatments were analyzed in three areas: grass monoculture, legume monoculture and legume intercropped with the grass during the dry and wet seasons. Litter bags containing the legume, grass or a mixture of both species were incubated to estimate the decomposition rate and microorganism colonization. Decomposition constants (K) and litter half-lives (T1/2) were estimated by an exponential model whereas number of...

Estimation of soil organic carbon (SOC) at different soil depths and soil use in the Sumapaz paramo, Cundinamarca - Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Montes-Pulido,Carmen Rosa; Ramos-Miras,José Joaquín; San José -Wery,Ana María.
Abstract The vertical distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC), considered to be a key component of the carbon cycle, is still poorly understood in tropical highest mountain ecosystems such as the Andean paramo. The estimation of the SOC in the presence and absence of anthropic intervention, will help to define policies to mitigate CO2 emissions into the atmosphere from this ecosystem. The aim of this research was to determine soil organic carbon sequestration at three soil depths under two types of soil use in the paramo of Sumapaz, Colombia. The soil variations of pH, phosphorus, aluminum, bulk density, carbon sequestration, cation exchange capacity, texture and to estimate the vertical distribution of soil organic carbon SOC, were evaluated,...
